Who Can Be Against Us?

“If God is for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31 (ESV)

Read that again. If God is for us, who can be against us? Unfortunately, at this particular time I could actually make a list of who’s against me. Could you? I pray not.

As I think of those who are against me, I go back to Psalm 56, which I shared in another recent devotional. David is writing about when the Philistines seized him. Sharing parts of verses 8-11 when he is calling out to God: “You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?” “This I know, that God is for me. In God, whose word I praise in the Lord, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me?” (ESV)

I know the ultimate enemy is behind all of these things. I know he comes to steal, kill, and destroy. I know God has already won the war, yet the battles continue on. The smaller battles in our minds, in our lives, in our country right now. It’s a battlefield all around us. David had his battles, too.

Is this a surprise to God? No. Is it ever a surprise to God? No. I wish I knew why I face personal battles. I pray they would go away. But for some reason God is allowing them to continue. I believe it’s to bring me to my knees in front of Him…to lay my life at His feet over and over and over again.

Our personal trials are His gain. As we continue to struggle, His hope is that we will continue to come to Him…that we would strengthen the relationship we have with Him.

As David says, God puts my tears in a bottle. He sees my tossings. But above all of that, David says he will not be afraid. It’s in God he trusts.

Friend, do you trust Him? Go to Him. Surrender and lay it down before Him. The battles may continue on, but you have the upper hand: Jesus. Take refuge in Him. Let him hide you under His wing for a while…take a reprieve and let Him comfort you the way only He can.

Then put on the full armor of God and stand confident. If you are in Jesus, you are already victorious.
